ITALY – Cinque Terre & The Amalfi Coast

I won’t say much about this part of our trip, just that the photos don’t give the place justice.  It is impossible for us to convey the way your stomach lurches at the steepness of the rocky outcrops, the heat and humidity on your skin, or the tightness of the curves of the (crazy narrow!) roads.  We were amazed at the resourcefulness of the local people in finding the space to grow beautiful gardens and carry on their regular lives on the narrow terraces.  I hope you can see a glimpse of all this in our photos.  Grab a cup of coffee and get comfortable because there are a lot of them!

First there is the Cinque Terre, or “five lands”, on a remote part of the Italian Riviera.  The five villages are a maze of steep stairways and alleyways too steep for cars and are joined by trails along the coast.   This is the beach at Vernazza where we stayed for a few days.0043travel photogIMG_57620040travel photogIMG_5478z

The next section is from the Amalfi coast.  One of our favourite places in Italy.  The bus ride there is an adventure in itself with sheer cliffs 500 feet above the ocean.    0001travel photogIMG_5795

Jennifer Rodriguez-Cruz - So amazing, guys. I have to say though, for me, there is just something about the closeup one of just the boats…

michelle horsman - So awesome you guys! Italy looks amazing! It makes me want to go there even more now. Great job as always!

Michelle - I love the pics of the beach chairs and umbrellas. Might need a couple for my house… :)

elizabeth - thanks for the comments ladies!

Lynne (friend of Elise and Pierre) - absolutely beautiful pictures… and you did do the Amafli Coast justice… simply breathtaking… just like the place itself. Thanks!

Alice McKInnon (APAC) - Keep looking at these photos over and over…..I know I will go to Italy and Croatia soon. Please tell me what lenses you took with you and did you haul along a tripod? Would it be easy enough to rent a car for just a couple of days here and there? Did you have a car for Tuscany? How did you do the Amalfi Coast…on a bus? Enough questions for now!

admin - Hi Alice,

We took the 5D and 5D MarkII bodies and just some basic lenses since we were packing light. A 24-70, a zoom lens and no tripod. We did rent a car in Tuscany and the South of Italy and renting a car is easy although I wouldn’t recommend driving in other parts of the country unless you are brave and have someone to help you with signs. Most of the time we travelled by train and bus. The Amalfi coast is best by bus I think. You’ll love it there!
