I won’t say much about this part of our trip, just that the photos don’t give the place justice. It is impossible for us to convey the way your stomach lurches at the steepness of the rocky outcrops, the heat and humidity on your skin, or the tightness of the curves of the (crazy narrow!) roads. We were amazed at the resourcefulness of the local people in finding the space to grow beautiful gardens and carry on their regular lives on the narrow terraces. I hope you can see a glimpse of all this in our photos. Grab a cup of coffee and get comfortable because there are a lot of them!
First there is the Cinque Terre, or “five lands”, on a remote part of the Italian Riviera. The five villages are a maze of steep stairways and alleyways too steep for cars and are joined by trails along the coast. This is the beach at Vernazza where we stayed for a few days.

The beginning of the trail between Riomaggiore and Manarola. The widest and easiest of the trails to hike called “Via dell’ Amore”.

The next section is from the Amalfi coast. One of our favourite places in Italy. The bus ride there is an adventure in itself with sheer cliffs 500 feet above the ocean.

A token photo of us.

Just one more from Cinque Terre as the sun set.
